Despite a challenging year so far, small and independent businesses are off to a solid start as holiday shopping begins.

That’s according to Shopify, which reported on Tuesday that its more than one million merchants saw record sales of more than $5.1 billion over the Black Friday / Cyber Monday shopping weekend.

Between Nov. 27 and 30, total sales on the platform grew 76% over the same period last year, when the company reported $2.9 billion in sales for its merchants.

Holiday shopping started earlier this year, the company said. Daily totals started increasing 19 days before Cyber Monday, which was two weeks earlier than last year. The sales peaked at 12 p.m. eastern time on Black Friday with $102 million in sales during that hour.

The highest performing category among Shopify merchant sales was apparel and accessories, followed by health and beauty, then home and garden. The cities seeing the most sales were New York, Los Angeles and London, with the U.S., the U.K., and Canada the top-selling countries.

The percentage of sales from mobile devices as compared to those on desktop stayed close to the previous year’s, Shopify said. This year, 67% of total sales were made on mobile, compared to 68% in 2019.

More than 44 million consumers across the world made purchases from Shopify merchants, up 50% over the previous year. They spent an average of $89.20 per order.  

The company also said that it offset all carbon emissions from deliveries of the orders on its platform, which equated to 62,000 tons of carbon emissions offset.
